World Heart Day 2017 Celebrations in Cape Town

World Heart Day is a global initiative of the World Heart Federation to raise global awareness of cardiovascular disease and its prevention. To commemorate World Heart Day in South Africa, Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain was illuminated in red lights for the second year.  This year the Big Wheel at the Victoria and Alfred Water Front in Cape Town was also lit up in red for the first time.

Cape Town hosts 4th Annual Listen to My Heart Patient Event

The RHD community of researchers and health care workers at University of Cape Town under the banner of the Stop RHD ASAP program have created a tradition of patient events to include, recognize and celebrate the RHD patient community. Starting in 2014, the first patient event was a luncheon to show appreciation for study participation and to share preliminary results of the Global Rheumatic Heart Disease Registry (REMEDY) study prior to presentation at an international congress.

Interview with Ilaitia Usa Tukana

Ilaitia Usa Tukana comes from Fiji in the Western Pacific. He grew up playing rugby in a family with two brothers and two sisters. Having studied software engineering at the University of the South Pacific in Suva, he now works at the Central Bank of Fiji. At the age of 8 years old, Ilaitia was diagnosed with rheumatic heart disease (RHD). We recently spoke to Ilaitia about this diagnosis, and why he now advocates for greater awareness about the dangers of sore throat and RHD.
