RHD Action Prospectus

Report (PDF 2.87 MB)

RHD Action is a global initiative that unites and empowers the rheumatic heart disease community. Led by a coalition of core organizations, RHD Action shares technical advice, advocacy support, and policy insights with partners and allies across the world. Together, we work to create positive change and better health outcomes for people living with rheumatic heart disease (RHD) and their communities.
We formed in 2014 as a partnership between the World Heart Federation, RhEACH and Medtronic Philanthropy, alongside inaugural demonstration projects in Uganda and Tanzania and the wider RHD community.

Our goal is to achieve a 25% reduction in mortality from rheumatic heart disease by the year 2025 in under-25-year-olds.

We are working towards this goal by giving a powerful platform to existing work in RHD prevention and control, while providing new innovative tools, guidance, and opportunities to the RHD community.

Our priorities synthesize ten key areas of RHD control, and were developed with the participation of regional bodies, RHD research groups, and global policy advocates.

These ten priorities form the core focus areas of RHD Action, and are structured in a ‘priorities pyramid’ with three main categories:
• People and communities
• Medicines and technologies
• Systems and services

The pyramid guides the programmatic work of RHD Action and informs our decision making. It reflects the primacy of people living with RHD in our activities, the essential bedrock of strong health systems, and necessary prerequisites for disease control.

Children’s National Health System seeks a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow with an interest in in global health research to join our Center, Strengthening the Health System Response to Rheumatic Heart Disease: Developing Evidence-Based Strategies For Prevention. This Center is one of four recently awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) as part of the AHA’S Strategically Focused Children’s Research Network. This two-year fellowship will enable the trainee to engage in basic/translational, clinical, and population research while working across three interconnected projects. The fellow will also participate in educational, mentorship and professional development programs based on the applicant’s professional goals and interests. We seek to train the next generation of globally minded transdisciplinary investigators and equip them with the skills they will need to develop impactful independent careers in basic, clinical and/or population science research.

In 2012, Bienmoyo Foundation screened more than 7000 schoolchildren in the rural Mbulu District of Tanzania for various health conditions, with an emphasis on primary prevention of Rheumatic Heart Disease by diagnosing and treating Strep-A infection.

Strep-A is a simple infection that looks a lot like the flu or Malaria. It costs just dollars a month to treat, but if not properly diagnosed and treated, there is a chance that it can lead to Rheumatic Heart Disease which damages heart valves and can lead to heart failure by the teens and 20s of a person's life.

Migrant and Refugee Health: Rheumatic Heart Disease (Information brief)

The global refugee crisis is likely contributing to the burden of RHD and raising serious new concerns about increasing prevalence and limitations of care. Currently, an unprecedented 68.5 million people around the world have been forced from their homes. Among them are 25.4 million refugees, over half of whom are under the age of 18, when the risk of ARF is greatest.

Refugees and displaced persons from settings affected by crisis often have complex needs and an increased risk of health problems related to their journeys. Many migrants experience difficulties in access to and continuity of health care. Many refugees lack access to any health records, continuity of service or care for chronic disease. This makes identifying and managing RHD particularly difficult.

You might not have heard of rheumatic heart disease; an inflammatory condition rife in developing populations - form the Northern Territory here in Australia, through the Pacific, and into Africa to name but a few.
