Welcome to Circulation on the Run, your weekly podcast summary and backstage pass to the journal and its editors.
Circulation on the Run podcast's feature paper (Latent Rheumatic Heart Disease: Identifying the Children at Highest Risk of Unfavorable Outcome) really reminds us that rheumatic heart disease remains the most common cardiovascular disease among the world's youth. These days, echocardiographic screening provides a promising tool for early detection. However, the utility of this tool really depends on knowing the natural history of screen detected rheumatic heart disease, so-called latent rheumatic heart disease. Now, that has remained clear until today's paper. I'm so pleased to have with us the first and corresponding author, Dr. Andrea Beaton, from Children's National Medical Center in Washington D.C., as well as Dr. Bongani Mayosi, Associate Editor from University of Cape Town, South Africa.
Dr. Carolyn Lam from Circulation Journal speaks with lead author Dr. Andrea Beaton and Dr. Bongani Mayosi, Associate Editor from University of Cape Town, South Africa. Link to full article and supplementary material (including a transcript of this podcast) is available here.

Stroke occurs when a part of the brain does not receive adequate blood supply. Depending on the size and area of brain affected, stroke can cause death or significant disability. Often this disability is profound and life-long. The most recent data suggests that 25.7 million people have stroke each year, causing 6.5 million deaths.
Stroke affects people of all ages, including young adults and children, and can have a devastating impact on families – particularly in countries where access to care is limited. Between 1990 and 2013, there was an increase of almost 40% in the total number of young adults dying from stroke in developing countries.
