Fiji launches “Benza” campaign highlighting importance of treatment… even if you feel well!
The Fiji RHD Control Program recently launched the "Benza" (benzathine penicillin G) campaign to highlight the importance of ongoing treatment for rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease. The campaign is specifically aimed at people living with rheumatic heart disease, their families and carers and will be part of a multimedia campaign across print, television and social media. Additionally, clinical posters and information will be displayed in all clinics and hospitals throughout the country over the coming months.
The campaign is part of a series of awareness and advocacy activities and initiatives spearheaded by the Fiji Ministry of Health and Medical Services and the Fiji RHD Control Program.
RHD is a common yet preventable heart condition, causing significant morbidity, disability and mortality through childhood, adolescence and early adult life. Recent research has shown that RHD affects as many as 1 in 50 children aged 5-15 in Fiji.
The RHD Program in Fiji has benefitted from a variety of innovative approaches and partnership. The Ministry of Health enjoys ongoing support from both the public and private sector. Since 2009, Cure Kids has supported RHD activities through ongoing funding from foundation key partner Accor Hotels and support from Fiji Water Foundation who also provided specific funding for the Rheumatic Fever Information System (RFIS) which was launched in July 2016 by the former Minister for Health and Medical Services, Hon. Jone Usamate.
